Arcon Housing Association specialist housing scheme inviting expressions of interest

Arcon Housing Association is a well established Housing Association based in the centre of Manchester with 1,200 properties in management.

Whilst the majority of their properties are general needs homes, one of their values and objectives is to provide housing to specialist care providers. At present they have 6 schemes of this type in Manchester (including Marillac House) and these are leased to 5 different charities who provide care and support to adults with learning difficulties as well as people with drug and alcohol problems.

Students sleep rough in bid to end to destitution of asylum seekers

Manchester STAR and Amnesty will tonight hold a Sleep-out on Oxford Road to campaign against the destitution of asylum seekers.

Thousands of asylum seekers are living in extreme poverty or destitute in Britain. Some are supported by the government, but simply do not receive enough to meet their basic needs, and others have been refused asylum and receive no support at all.

Before Christmas, Mike Wild (Chief Executive of Macc) and Nigel Rose (Macc’s Strategic Lead on Commissioning) met with Geoff Little (Deputy Chief Executive of Manchester City Council) and Carol Culley (Assistant Chief Executive, Finance and Performance).  We wanted to discuss the impact not just of the next wave of public sector cuts but the prolonged effects of recession. We also wanted to explore the Council’s views on how the voluntary and community sector can rise to meet the challenges faced by the communities in Manchester.

A newly launched energy-saving scheme will offer you a range of choices to help reduce your heating bills.

After major energy suppliers recently announced they were increasing their prices, Manchester City Council are urging residents to register their interest in a collective bulk-buy scheme by visiting: www.betterenergydeals.org.uk or calling 0800 988 2426. This scheme is supported by all the councils in Greater Manchester.

Lipreading Class

Who are lipreading classes for?
Lipreading classes are designed for people with a hearing loss who may be finding it difficult to follow conversations.

Sometimes, friends and families of people with a hearing loss also come along to learn how to communicate better with their friend or relative.

The emphasis of the class is on fully including people with a hearing loss so that they can fully understand what is going on in the class.

Following last year's event which exceeded all expectations attracting over 50,000 spectators and 2,400 participants Manchester Day is fast becoming one of the North West's flagship summer events.

Plans for this year's Manchester Day are well underway - the date is confirmed as Sunday 22 June and the theme is 'Going Global' reflecting ideas around communications, travel and diversity as well as Manchester’s international connections and the city's position as an innovative world leader. Manchester Day 2014 is also going to be bigger and better!
