BBC launches volunteering initiative encouraging people to Do Something Great

15 Apr 2016 - 09:47 by michelle.foster

This year the BBC will be encouraging audiences to Do Something Great and discover their ‘inner volunteer’.

With a wealth of inspiring and heart-warming programmes across TV and radio, and a bespoke online quiz to help people discover their perfect volunteering match, the BBC will be putting people and charities in touch, to help each other.

BBC One and BBC Two will be getting behind the season in the lead up to this year’s National Volunteers’ Week in June. The Springwatch team will be calling on viewers to get involved, with a call to action this Easter and again in June, with beach cleans, planting for wildlife and a host of activities for audiences to join in.

Hairy Bikers Si and Dave will take on one of their biggest challenges - bringing together pensioners and troubled teens, in Old School With The Hairy Bikers for BBC Two, to see if 12 unlikely couples spending time together as equals can transform their difficult lives.

A new BBC One series, Saving Lives At Sea, tells the story of the ordinary men and women who staff RNLI lifeboat stations across the UK - an army of unpaid volunteers who provide a vital rescue service on Britain’s waters. And DIY SOS will be celebrating the efforts of the series’ volunteers, uncovering what motivates people to lend a hand.

Other programmes involved in the season include Countryfile, Gardeners’ World and Lifeline as well as the local BBC radio networks. In addition, Do Something Great will be joining forces with the Radio 1 and 1Xtra #1millionhours campaign, which is encouraging young people to pledge their time to make a difference.

Online, a new BBC iWonder quiz, Could You Be Your Neighbourhood’s Superhero? will be giving audiences who may have never volunteered before the chance to discover their perfect volunteering match. After completing the quiz they will be presented with personalised suggestions and links directing them to one of our partners to find opportunities nearby. Whether a people-person, best suited to volunteering with the young or the old; a hands-on helper just right for cleaning up beaches, planting for wildlife or tackling DIY SOS-style home renovation projects; or a wallflower more comfortable with helping from home, there is something to suit everyone. It will be accompanied by an iWonder guide exploring ‘Why Should I Volunteer’.
