Charityworks Graduate Programme

17 Feb 2014 - 13:46 by michelle.foster

Charityworks is a 12 month graduate scheme designed to find and grow the future leaders of non-profit organisations.

The Charityworks Graduate Scheme is a professional development programme run by a partnership of charities and housing associations, and is carefully designed to find and grow the future leaders of nonprofit organisations in a cost-effective way.

Fundamentally open and collaborative, at its most basic the programme allows any organisation regardless of size the opportunity to run their own graduate programme.

A charitable organisation itself, Charityworks offers a unique opportunity for graduates direct from university and people already working in non-profit organisations to gain experience and build networks across the sector, at the same time as providing a cost-effective talent solution for non-profit organisations.

‘Graduate Trainees’ on the Charityworks programme are rigorously selected recent graduates from the UK’s top universities. Successful candidates spend a year on the scheme, during which time they undertake one or more paid placements in partner non-profit organisations, as well as taking part in the
Charityworks professional development programme, regularly meeting a mentor, and writing a series of assignments. There are three key types of placement: Corporate (human resources, finance, business development, fundraising, communications), Operational (front line service delivery), and Portfolio (working on a number of projects across different teams and departments).

‘High Fliers’ are staff identified by participating charities as ‘rising stars’ who would benefit from professional development. They are either new to management roles, or have been identified as having management potential. High Fliers take part in the same training programme as Graduate Trainees, meet with a mentor, and write a series of assignments related to their work and the programme.

The Charityworks Graduate Management Programme provides learning and experiences relevant to first level management roles within the non-profit sector. Delivered over 12 months, it is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management and is designed to attract, grow and retain future managers and leaders for the charity sector.
