Labour consultation on national statutory youth service

31 Jul 2018 - 15:28 by helen.walker

The Labour Party has issued a consultation document on youth services.

They state that "Youth services do a vital job in our communities. The benefits they provide for young people are real and long-lasting. However, with direct government funding to local authorities falling by a half since 2010, youth services have seen significant cutbacks as councils seek to make savings. This means that a generation of young people could potentially be left without the opportunity to play a full part in our communities."

Labour have issued a consultation document which states that "Following this consultation process, Labour aims to achieve the following:
1. to create a National Strategy for Youth Work and a Charter underpinned by law, which will define what sufficient levels will be
2. to create a sustainable funding model to support the delivery of a statutory youth service"

They want anyone with interest in shaping youth services to take part in the consultation on the plans, led by Cat Smith, the party's shadow youth minister.
