Now in their fifth year, the University of Manchester’s annual Making a Difference Awards for social responsibility are now open for entries. The awards recognise and celebrate the many different types of social responsibility achievements of University staff, students, alumni and partners in the local community.

Improving young people's mental health; uncovering the impact of austerity policies on everyday life for families and communities in Greater Manchester; students providing essential dental treatment to low income and homeless patients; educating the public about antibiotic drug resistance; improving the healthcare of Manchester's homeless population and encouraging female school students to engage with science and engineering are just a few of the initiatives that were recognised during the 2018 Making a Difference Awards.

The Awards cover a wide range of categories including environmental sustainability, research, community and public engagement, widening participation, social enterprise and equality and diversity.

Previous winners and highly commended recipients state how receiving a Making a Difference Award has helped them raise awareness of the issues the feel passionate about and highlighted the impact their work has had, as well as providing well-deserved recognition to their colleagues and teams.

The Awards will culminate in a high-profile awards ceremony, hosted by the President and Vice-Chancellor in May 2019. This event celebrates the commitment and dedication of individuals and teams across the University demonstrating how they make real difference to the social and environmental wellbeing of local communities and wider society.

James Thompson, Vice-President for Social Responsibility said: “So many of our colleagues and students are making a real difference to lives of others. I would like to encourage anyone who is making a positive contribution to society to enter our Making a Difference Awards. The Awards will highlight the significant impact their work is having and provide a platform to showcase their hard work and commitment.”
