One Million Mentors – opportunity for young people

24 Mar 2017 - 10:42 by michelle.foster

Young people today are suffering the worst economic prospects for several generations. Though mentoring is understood to have an impact on increasing opportunities for young people, the current offer in the UK is patchy in terms of quality, delivery and impact. One million mentors

Mentoring offers the opportunity to get out of their bubble; to do good in a structured way; and to use their talents, skills and experiences effectively in order to help skill up the future work force.

Mentoring is needed now more than ever in the post-Brexit era, where deep divisions have been seen between generations and social classes being exposed in the country.

One Million Mentors is a pioneering approach using the advantages of technology in order to transform the process of mentoring. The purpose of One Million Mentors is to train, recruit and connect a million mentors to a million young people in the UK to help them maximise their talents and get into the world of work, over the next 10 years.

A pilot in Manchester is looking to recruit 200 mentors by the end of June to be trained and deployed to organisations working with young adults aged 18-25. The pilot has received funding from Spirit 2012, a charity established through a £47m endowment through the Big Lottery Fund following the London Olympic Games.

Upcoming face-to-face training session
The first training session is taking place in Manchester on Wednesday 29 March 2017 at Friend's House from 5.30pm to 9pm.

Light buffet refreshments will be available from 5.30pm - 6pm providing you with a time to mingle and meet other mentors.

The session will look at the One Million Mentors procedure and where it is up to now, with a time for questions and answers following that. The session will also look at scenarios in groups and will finish with learning styles.

All mentors who sign up are offered the opportunity to take part in the offline training, although you do not have to complete the online training before the session, it would help you get the most out of the training on offer.
