Happy New Year to you all! We hope you had a restful break over the festive period.
 
This month, we look ahead into the new year on new events and a refreshed list of priorities. 
 

We’re excited to host the upcoming Community Explorer's on the 22nd of January on Community Safety which has received great traction. The event will be focusing on building safer communities in response to recent violence. After the event we will share our write up on the next steps from the event. 

As always, we also highlight the impactful work of VCSE organisations across Manchester, showcasing campaigns, reports, and research driving real progress.

Amendments to the Employment Rights Bill

"Recent amendments to the Employment Rights Bill has meant that large companies are required to make Gender Action Plans to address gender pay gaps and supporting employees through the menopause, and protections against dismissal will be strengthened for pregnant women and new mothers."

VCSE Organisations are amongst large-grants recipients playing their part in reducing inequalities in cancer care in Greater Manchester

"Funded by the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, four Greater Manchester VCSE organisations have been awarded grants of up to £25,000 for projects which will test practical interventions that may help improve early diagnosis rates as well as continue to learn about the barriers and challenges communities face."

What is the Manchester Local Offer?

"Manchester Local Offer helps children and young people with SEND up to the age of 25 and their parents/carers in the Manchester City Council area understand what services and support they can expect locally. This includes their statutory entitlements which are required by law.  

There is a newsletter and regular in person drop ins to support families across Manchester. Please do share this with your organisations to ensure this support is accessible to those who need it."

Andy Burnham sends letter to Government following publication of English Devolution White Paper

On the 17th of December 2024 the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, issued a statement and shared a letter sent to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, following the publication of the English Devolution White Paper.

Action on homelessness and rough sleeping in Greater Manchester boosted by £47m from Government

Councils and GMCA to receive £47m from national funding package announced today (Wednesday 18 December 2024)

Funding will come through Greater Manchester’s new Integrated Settlement, with more flexibility to focus on key areas and support those in need.

You can visit the MCC website for the agendas and meeting papers for all Scrutiny Committees. Macc would encourage VCSE sector colleagues to attend any of the Scrutiny Committee meetings, which are relevant to your organisation and/or to send information that showcase the vital work your organisation does. Each Manchester City Council Scrutiny Committee meeting is open to the public, streamed live and recorded.

January is National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Modern Slavery Act 2025 Committee, call for the Government to take actions to protect victims and prevent modern slavery

130,000 people in the UK are estimated to be victims of modern slavery and the prosecution rates for are as low as 1.8%. 

"Modern slavery is characterised by exploitation of others for personal gain. It occurs in many areas, including illegal drugs, prostitution, agriculture, and the care sector.

When the Modern Slavery Act was passed in 2015, it was said to be world-leading. Since then, the world has changed and best practice has moved on."

Have your say on the GMFRS Fire Plan 2025-2029 which outlines the priorities to keep our communities safe  

Residents across Greater Manchester are invited to share their views and insights on the proposed Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s new Fire Plan 2025-2029, ensuring that community needs and safety remain at the forefront of future plans for the Fire Service.  

People can now have their say on the plans in an eight-week consultation, running until Monday 10 March 2025.

In October 2024, Greater Manchester launched a new Hate Crime Plan that focuses on education and raising awareness of hate crime, its consequences and how to report it, while also improving support for victims.

"We want Greater Manchester to be a place where everyone can live a good life, growing up, getting on and growing old in a greener, fairer, more prosperous city-region. To achieve this we have set out the Greater Manchester Hate Crime Plan to tackle hate in its many forms and prevent it from occurring. Whether you have a disability, are old or young or whatever your differences, you have the right to be treated equitably. In Greater Manchester we also acknowledge and include alternative subculture and lifestyle in monitoring hate crime"

GMCA have launched a new Police and Crime Plan (2024-2029)

"Equality, culture, and building trust and confidence in policing and community safety are at the heart of the new Police and Crime Plan, 2024-2029, which was launched on Wednesday 18 December 2024 by Greater Manchester’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The Plan is called ‘Standing Together’ and it sets the direction for policing and community safety across the city-region over the next four years."

Greater Manchester's Sexual Violence and Abuse Pathfinder 1st Year Event

The Greater Manchester Resilience Hub together with our Pathfinder Partnership members invite you to register to attend the Greater Manchester's Sexual Assault recovery partnership 1 year event.

The day will be an opportunity to:

  • Celebrate what has been achieved to date
  • Promote the service and inform colleagues on how it supports survivors with complex mental health needs
  • Consider how we can sustain and develop what has been built to date to further meet the needs of survivors

Manchester Central Foodbank is hosting the Manchester Equal Start Summit  

Manchester Central Foodbank and a wide range of partners from across the education, health, advice, and community sectors for our 2025 Manchester Equal Start Summit.

It is absolutely FREE to attend and will involve schools, NHS teams, advice services, and other partners sharing the impacts of a wide range of child and family anti-poverty work that we have been conducting together over the last 3 years.

This event aims to be a participatory space for sharing experiences and building relationships with funders and other organisations to seed and grow more partnerships between the education, health, and community sectors to support our families in the best way that we can in the coming years.

Greater Manchester Holocaust Memorial Day Service 2025   

On January 22, 2025, we will be commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day in the annual Greater Manchester Holocaust Memorial Day Service.   

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is For a Better Future. There will be a series of readings, and musical performances before attendees join together in the candle lighting ceremony.   

 If you would like to be invited to this event or for this invite to be shared with other members of your organisation or community, please email engagement@greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk   

Manchester Jewish Museum are also holding an exhibition:

"To mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2025, the museum has been collaborating with a group of children from the Homework Club at NTCG Faith Tabernacle, Cheetham Hill. Ranging in age from 6 – 13, the children have been exploring stories from the museum’s collection, learning more about the experiences of Jewish refugees during the Second World War.

In response to the stories, they have been creating artworks on this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme of ‘For a Better Future’. "
