Welcome to the March edition of Macc’s Policy and Influence Shorts.
To mark Endometriosis Awareness month, this Shorts will be taking a focused lens on women's health with an article on why we need greater awareness on Endometriosis and an interview of Just One Thing on the importance of menopause support in the workplace with Sally Bolton.

As always, we also highlight the impactful work of VCSE organisations across Manchester, showcasing campaigns, reports, and research driving real progress.

Best wishes,

Zara, Josie, Jessica, Milly and Anushka

Endometriosis: The Long Road to Diagnosis, a Burdensome Process

To mark Endometriosis Awareness Month, Anushka and Jessica have written an article that really emphasises the life changing difficulties that people go through with endometriosis:

Endometriosis: The Long Road to Diagnosis, a Burdensome Process

"March is endometriosis awareness month. At Manchester Community Central we believe in the inclusion and support for all, and menstrual health is a core element of this support. Alongside our menopause policy, we have a menstrual health policy that provides support for our colleagues who may need more flexibility or adjustments to help them excel and achieve even when managing difficult menstrual health symptoms.

Endometriosis UK recently found that only 50% of 16-24 year olds know what endometriosis is. 47% of people surveyed in 2024 reported that they saw a GP 10 or more time before being diagnosed"

At Macc, we implore all organisations to have inclusive support for those struggling with their menstrual health and menopause. To provide a platform for this issue to be discussed, we are hosting an online event to share our learnings from implementing a menstrual health policy as a VCSE organisation ourselves. Understanding Employment Support Provided by the VCSE Sector
Macc invite you to take a few moments to complete our questionnaire, which aims to explore the current landscape of employment support provided by the VCSE sector. We are particularly keen to understand how VCSEs are assisting individuals not only in securing employment but also in offering the ongoing support required to keep them on track. The information collected from this survey will play an essential role in informing our Policy and Influence team as we develop workstream priorities within strategic spaces. Your perspectives will guide us in identifying challenges, opportunities and areas where additional support is needed in our shared mission to empower individuals towards sustainable employment. If you have any additional thoughts and comments to share, do not hesitate to reach out to Zara, our Policy and Influence Manager on zara@macc.org.uk.

Crime and Policing Bill 2025

The Government has released information about the Crime and Policing Bill, which was introduced in the House of Commons on 25 February 2025.

"Over the last 14 years, community policing has been downgraded, with neighbourhood officers pulled off the beat to fill shortages elsewhere, weakening connections with the communities they serve."

The Bill introduces a new statutory duty for individuals undertaking key roles with responsibility for children and young people in England to report sexual abuse when they are made aware of it, alongside a new criminal offence of attempting to prevent someone reporting child sexual abuse.

A safe space in a new place: Finding homes for refugee children.

"Children arriving in the UK need a safe, caring place to call home. Somewhere they can settle for a few weeks, months or sometimes years as they take steps towards rebuilding their future. They are just children. They arrive here from often incredibly traumatic situations – fleeing from war, persecution, violence and civil unrest. Some have been trafficked, many exploited as they made their way here. These refugee children arrive without parents or family to look after them. As a result, these children have emotional, cultural and practical needs – but you could be the one to help them reclaim their childhoods."

Supported lodgings is offering a place in your home to a teenager who has been in care or who arrives in this country with no family or safe place to stay.

Delivering Maternity Equality: A summit to identify the challenges of maternity inequalities in Greater Manchester, and develop pathways to serving families and children better

"Maternity inequalities remain stark, with maternal mortality rates significantly higher for Black and Asian women and those living in deprived areas. Perinatal mental illness also affects 1 in 4 births, contributing to poorer outcomes for families and children.

On Friday 14 March, Caribbean & African Health Network and The University of Manchester, are hosting a summit to bring together the key people and organisations across the city region to discuss the challenges of maternity inequalities, to lay out the evidence that we have, and, crucially, to start an ongoing conversation about how communities, health and care professionals, policymakers and academics can work together to eliminate the unfair and avoidable ways in which people do not receive the maternity care that they deserve."

Beyond behaviour change: making local environmental policy and action more inclusive

"Behaviour change is central to discussions about achieving net zero and encouraging the adoption of the sustainable practices needed to get there. However, there are limits to focusing on individual behaviour change with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, and it is essential that decision-makers take social and cultural differences seriously.

Working with local communities, researchers at The University of Manchester have examined the limitations of taking a behavioural change approach to local environmental policy and explored alternative strategies for a just transition to a sustainable society.

Join the event to hear more about this research and discuss how environmental policy and action can take a place-based approach that works for all communities within an area and moves away from views that some people are ‘hard to reach’."

Speakers:

  • Sherilyn MacGregor, Professor of Environmental Politics
  • Liz Atherton, Climate Action Now programme manager, Stockport Council
  • Chaired by Professor Cecilia Wong, Policy@Manchester Academic Co-Director and Professor of Spatial Planning
