Nature in the City of Bees: Greenspaces, Climate Resilience and Social Injustice in Manchester

Michaux Danzoll has written an informative article on the history of Earth Day and the importance of greenspace in our city of Manchester.

"April 22nd marks the celebration of Earth Day, a day honouring nature and raising awareness of the growing human-made threats our world faces, from climate change to biodiversity loss. The modern environmental movement began 55 years ago in response to the rise in air pollution and its impact on public health and nature, as twenty million students, workers, activists, and people passionate about preserving the environment poured onto streets across the U.S. demanding government action. As the issues impacting the natural world evolved, so has Earth Day."

Amanda Nguyen: An Inspiring Story

In light of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Amanda's story is truly awe-inspiring. Amanda was raped at 22 in her University Campus in the US. Nguyen was shocked to find she would have to pay for her rape evidence kit – which might be destroyed long before any court case. Amanda fought for survivors’ rights and changed congressional law (Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act), and put her lifelong ambitions of being an astronaut on hold. Monday 14th of April 2025, Amanda joined 5 other women to make the first all female space flight in human history, Amanda also is the first Vietnamese woman in space! On Monday she fulfilled her lifelong dream and ambition, despite all the trauma and pain she went through.

History of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April also marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).

"April 2025 marks the official 24th anniversary of NSVRC's Sexual Assault Awareness Month — but did you know we can trace its history even longer?

Even before its official declaration, SAAM was about both awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Looking at the history of the movement to end sexual violence, it’s clear why: It’s impossible to prevent an issue no one knows about, and it’s difficult to make people aware of a problem without providing a solution. The two work in tandem, and they always have. From the civil rights movement to the founding of the first rape crisis centers to national legislation and beyond, the roots of SAAM run deep"

Understanding Employment Support Provided by the VCSE Sector
Macc invite you to take a few moments to complete our questionnaire, which aims to explore the current landscape of employment support provided by the VCSE sector. We are particularly keen to understand how VCSEs are assisting individuals not only in securing employment but also in offering the ongoing support required to keep them on track. The information collected from this survey will play an essential role in informing our Policy and Influence team as we develop workstream priorities within strategic spaces. Your perspectives will guide us in identifying challenges, opportunities and areas where additional support is needed in our shared mission to empower individuals towards sustainable employment. If you have any additional thoughts and comments to share, do not hesitate to reach out to Zara, our Policy and Influence Manager on zara@macc.org.uk.

From Adolescence to Grown Men (Painting Their Nails)

"As the world watches a family fall apart, hundreds of men try to piece themselves together - in a rebellious nail painting experiment exploring healthy masculinity.

Adolescence is essential not because of the noise it creates but because of the quiet ringing in our ears, where an explanation ought to be.

The gut punch of the series is that we’re all answerable, yet no one has the answer."

Citizens Advice Data Insights: Child Poverty

"As many families struggle with rising cost of living, more and more children are pulled into poverty. The appalling scale of poverty across the country is something our advisers witness every day. Stagnant wages and the sky-high cost of essentials have pushed many families into a negative budget, where their income fails to cover the cost of essential outgoings.

The government is due to release its Child Poverty strategy later this year, and the scale of the challenge is huge. If it succeeds, it could pull thousands of children out of poverty, allowing them to focus on their education and future. If it fails we face a future where many children's entire childhoods are unfairly restricted by poverty."
