Urgent Care Stakeholder Briefing – Manchester and Trafford
As you will be aware, Emergency Departments (ED) across the country are experiencing increased attendances and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is currently seeing a significant increase in people attending at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital EDs and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

All staff across the Greater Manchester health and social care sector are working incredibly hard to ensure all patients receive safe care. Your support is needed to push out the following key messages via your own communication channels to ensure that the sickest and most urgent patients who are seriously unwell are treated in a timely manner:
      •    Some people attending the emergency departments do not have emergency or life-threatening
conditions, many have minor illnesses and injuries which could be safely managed at home with
advice from NHS 111 or NHS online, GPs or community pharmacies
      •    You support is needed to advise to the public to think carefully about which service is appropriate
for their needs and to only attend the emergency departments if necessary
      •    For support, both in and out of hours, ensure that people are aware they can contact NHS 111 first.
Call 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk NHS 111 staff are medically trained AND able to help people with urgent
           health care needs
      •    If people need urgent mental health help, they should call the mental health crisis line for free on
0800 953 0285 any time day or night for free, professional, and confidential help. This is open to
people living in the City of Manchester, Trafford, Bolton, and Salford
      •    Reassure everyone that the emergency departments are open/available to those who need those
           services

Everyone across the health and social care system is doing their best to manage this increased demand in NHS services and we need to work together to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Manchester and Trafford, along with the rest of Greater Manchester, has specific advice from the government. This is due to the fast spread of the Delta variant in Greater Manchester. Where possible you should:
      •    Meet outside rather than inside
      •    Stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household or support bubble
      •    Wear a mask where it is required
      •    Wash your hands regularly and for at least 20 seconds
      •    Get vaccinated

All over 18’s are now eligible to be vaccinated and we encourage you to get yours as you need two doses to be protected against the Delta variant.

Macc Equality Survey

Macc is reviewing our equalities and inclusion approach. We have been wanting to do this work for some time and while Covid-19 has disrupted so much over the last year, we believe this work is important and so we are now starting this as lockdown measures are easing. In the light of the increased focus on tackling racism, we want to make sure we are playing our part in that movement as best we can.

Like all organisations, Macc is always a “work in progress”. We know that we do not always get it right and that there is always room for improvement, always more we can do. We want to understand more about how Macc is seen by VCSE sector organisations in Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic communities. We know that some of that might be uncomfortable for us to hear but listening is the only way we can move forward.

If you have accessed our services, we would like to make sure we hear what your experience of this was. We also want to reach out to groups who may not have worked with Macc before as well as those we work with on a more regular basis.

Macc will engage key Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic organisations in a focus group following the survey. Macc is pleased to be working with brap on this review as a non-recipient of Macc’s services and outside the City, they bring expertise in developing anti-racism work and an independent perspective from outside of our local Manchester sector. You can find out more about brap’s work here

In the spirit of living our values (supportive, collaborative, influential) this short survey has been developed by brap with Macc and members of our Board of Trustees. It is designed to help Macc, our board, staff, and volunteers understand the current reach of our work and how our organisation and our work and services are experienced by groups in communities experiencing racial inequalities in Manchester. We will use the results to feed into our ongoing work to develop our anti-racism action plan and our practice and become a more inclusive organisation.

Complete the survey by 11 July 2021

You can complete the survey anonymously or leave your contact details at the end.

The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete.

Please note that Macc will not see your responses, the results will be collated by brap.

If you would like to find out more about the survey we are holding a Your Voice Matters event, where there will be an opportunity to talk to some of our board members including Charles Kwaku-Odoi from CAHN. This event will take place on 7 July 2021 and we will send out a separate invite for this.

Please do pass this survey onto other Black Asian Minority Ethnic led VCSE organisations, we want it to be distributed as widely as possible.

Please note we have used the term BAME in certain parts of the survey because we think it is a term that is well understood in our sector. However we do recognise it is limiting. Our principle is to describe individuals, groups and networks in the way that they prefer.

With thanks and best wishes

Mike Wild, Chief Executive, Macc

Voluntary Sector Assembly – Social Prescribing in Manchester
14 July, 2021 1.30pm - 3.30pm, Online
Social prescribing (Be Well) is operating across Manchester. A core element of the social prescribing model is linking people with long-term needs to neighbourhood organisations and assets, many of which are VCSE organisations.

The aim of this Voluntary Sector Assembly is for the VCSE sector to discuss and agree what it wants and needs in order to increase the impact and effectiveness of social prescribing. Together we will write a manifesto which will be presented by representatives of the assembly to senior representatives of Manchester Health and Care Commissioning and Manchester Local Care Organisation.

Join us for an afternoon of discussion and debate to help shape the future of social prescribing in the city.

Help us to get our online directory of voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations in Manchester up to date

 directory

We want to make sure everyone has access to up to date information about the support available from local voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE) organisations in Manchester – and, for those wishing to help, how they can support the work of local community organisations to ensure nobody is left behind during these difficult times.

We have repurposed our online directory as a free, open resource for pulling all this information together in one place so that local people, public sector partners and businesses can use it. This means that individuals can find what is open and what kinds of support are available. It also helps us at Macc understand what organisations need and how we can support our amazing VCSE colleagues in their continuing response to Covid-19.

Update or register your organisation on our online directory here

Blog post: How to fix Social Prescribing? By Nigel Rose, Strategic Lead (Commissioning)

On 14 July Macc is holding a voluntary sector assembly about social prescribing, where we will be helping the VCSE sector to write a manifesto about what we collectively want from social prescribing. This article is my personal take on some of the issues. I was heavily involved in the planning stages of social prescribing in Manchester 4 Years ago, and have kept touch with it ever since, however, I’m not going to discuss here how the Manchester social prescribing service in works.
