A ‘call out’ to the BME community to assist with a photographic campaign to raise awareness of prostate cancer

8 Mar 2019 - 10:45 by michelle.foster

This is a call out to the BEM/BAME community for individuals that have gone through prostate cancer/investigation journey.

Ian Smith is a freelance photographer, and, looking to continue/develop his work surrounding the awareness and early diagnosis of prostate cancer. To continue his work, Ian would like to invite subjects with a lived experience of prostate cancer, or, prostate investigation.

Ian has recently (May 2018) completed a similar photographic exhibition featuring heterosexual subjects. This exhibition (now touring North West locations), has had a positive impact with people enquiring about prostate cancer. This public exposure has generated some external support that will help me create the same awareness and positive message within the, BME, Trans, ethnic minority communities.

Ian wants to provide hope, encouragement, which will reduce anxiety and stress to men that maybe about to start out on this uncertain medical journey. The end game is to encourage men to seek early presentation to health care professionals and realising that being diagnosed with prostate cancer is not a death sentence. Ian is particularly interested in BME men, as there is a lot of misinformation swirling around this group.

This is an ideal opportunity for brave members of this underrepresented community to provide a voice for many other people. You will be part of a two-way message that will provide a better understanding.
