Description of opportunity:

Milk & Honey is a community space and cafe nestled in between Manchester University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Royal Northern College of Music. It provides a safe and nurturing space for students of all these institutions and the surrounding community through a diverse events programme and a volunteer-run community cafe.

Due to Covid-19, Milke and Honey has been temporarily transformed into The Well, part of the new ALL WILL BE WELL programme of events, talks and wholeness scheduling responding to the needs of the community as we emerge and deal with the impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Well project will work to reduce food insecurity for people on and around Manchester’s campus areas. Our small team will be joined by volunteers to help us deliver this project – baking, distributing food and translating recipes. However – one critical role will be cooking the cooked-chilled meals for those unable to cook at home, and this is why we’re seeking a volunteer chef.

They need help to make it happen. Just as Milk & Honey was powered by volunteers who showed up every day and believed in a better city, now more than ever The Well needs People Power to get good things going.

If you want to help make a difference for your community, your help is needed most… join us at The Well.

Role description:

As a volunteer chef you will work alongside our Head Chef and bring your own kitchen skills to help serve those in crisis on and round campus.

  • Prepare Well Pack cooked meals
  • Develop dishes alongside head Chef
  • Ability to follow recipes
  • Level 2 Food and Hygiene
  • Attention to cleanliness at all times and ability to follow all Covid-security measures.
  • Kitchen experience essential

Our Head Chef will be busy alongside other members of our team delivering the wider project, and so they require someone who can confidently and safely cook for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Could that person be you? You’ll also need to develop some recipes alongside our chef, follow recipes and maybe work with other volunteers (if social distancing allows) – so you’ll need to be a great all-rounder!

Role Requirements:

  • English language communication skills should be of a good level due to the responsibilities of this role.
  • Professional hygiene and cleanliness are key in food-based projects especially during the current Covid-19 climate, and therefore a level 2 qualification in Food Hygiene is required.
  • Experience working in a professional kitchen setting (in a voluntary or paid role) is also essential – although if you feel you have the other skills and requirements for this role but not this one, then we’re happy to have a chat with you about this as we know that there are many ways to gain experience!
