Description of opportunity:

Read Easy Wythenshawe is part of the national charity Read Easy and exists to help local adults who can’t read or find reading a challenge to read, through one-to-one coaching by trained coaches. It takes readers from Wythenshawe and the surrounding areas of South Manchester.

Read Easy UK is increasingly finding that computer or technical issues are having to be fielded at Head Office, so we are now on the look-out for a volunteer to offer IT skills to support reading coaches and the management team. Even the smallest things like setting up email accounts and accessing the Read Easy SharePoint site can be a real challenge for some volunteers, so your expertise will make the world of difference to helping adults learn to read in your community.

There is the potential for much of this support to be delivered remotely with the use of screen sharing and remote operation applications such as Team Viewer, which is free and very easy to use.

Additionally, there is a need to support the Management Team with their administration in tasks such as following up volunteer references, organising coach training and keeping track of books and tablets.

Tasks and duties will include:
ICT Support:

  • Be the first port of call for any IT queries within your local group
  • Support members of the Team to set up Read Easy email accounts when required
  • Assist volunteers with accessing online safeguarding training
  • If required, set up local WhatsApp groups or similar group forum
  • Support your Management Team to set up Zoom and any other tools that will help to improve local communications
  • Set up tablets for use by Readers and meet with the Readers to ensure they can use the tablet to access email and Zoom and login to a Zoom session

Group Administration:

  • Follow up volunteers’ references post interview and report back to the Volunteer Recruiter
  • Schedule coach training using the on-line booking system
  • Manage the resource distribution of items such as reading manuals, books and tablets etc.
  • Other administrative duties as required from time to time

What is in it for you?
You will:

  • Use and develop your IT knowledge, administrative and communication skills to support others
  • Meet and work collaboratively with new people
  • Be active and engaged, adding value to your local community.

Management Team
This is an integral role in the Management Team as it facilitates the key activities of the local Group. As a Management Team member, you will also be required to attend regular Management Team meetings (around 8 per year).
You will be joining an existing group and will be taken through an induction process with various members of the Management Team to ensure you can properly fulfil your role. You will be provided with all the documentation and information you need about how the group is intended to run.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Good understanding of IT, including email, Excel, Word and Zoom
  • General administration / organisational skills
  • Good communication and people skills
  • Patience and a sense of humour!
  • Availability of approx. half a day per week
