Description of opportunity:

The Moorside Unit, located in Urmston, Trafford, provides inpatient mental health services for adults and older people. We accept referrals from Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT) or via GMMH Liaison Team based within A&E departments at Trafford General Hospital. The patients on the unit are either informal or sectioned. We offer them and their carers information about mental health, recovery and the choices and resources available to them.

We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic volunteers to join our existing team to provide a range of diversional activities to support our patients’ recovery and to improve their experience of being a patient with us.

Feedback from our inpatient surveys tells us that our patients can experience boredom. Our volunteering roles have been developed to help alleviate this boredom and to demonstrate to our patients that we are listening to them and really do care. They complement the work of our Support Time Recovery Workers and Occupational Therapists and aim to improve our patient’s treatment outcomes.

We are currently recruiting Arts and Crafts Activities Volunteers.

The role involves leading and co-delivering a range of different arts and crafts activities such as drawing, painting, card and jewellery making, and crafts activities such as sewing, knitting, crocheting and much more – we welcome your suggestions for new activities. It involves encouraging patients to develop their skills and to increase their self-confidence to create and enjoy arts and crafts.

As part of the role we require you to:

  • To be available for at least two hours per week (hours are negotiable as this is a volunteer role, but we do ask for a weekly or fortnightly commitment)
  • To lead and co-deliver with at least one other volunteer or staff member a range of arts and crafts activities to support our patients’ recovery and enhance their inpatient experience
  • To sensitively encourage and support patients to participate and to increase their selfconfidence in creating and enjoying arts and crafts
  • To comply with all Trust policies and procedures but in particular in relation to safeguarding vulnerable adults and children and information sharing
  • To work as part of the Moorside Team to receive and share information in order to safeguard individuals and support them to work towards their recovery

In order to fulfil the duties of this role we ask that you:

  • Are aged 18 and over
  • Have an understanding of mental health and the recovery process through your own lived experience, studies or work
  • Have a love of arts and crafts that you are keen to share
  • Can commit to at least two hours per week, weekly or fortnightly; complete a local induction and undertake all mandatory training within four weeks of starting the role
  • Are able to lead and facilitate group activities
  • Are able to work as part of a team and to support your co-volunteer(s)
  • Are able to listen and communicate effectively and sensitively encourage patient participation
  • Have a basic understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and children
  • Have a basic understanding of confidentiality and information sharing legislation
  • Have a basic understanding of professional boundaries
  • Have respect and compassion for others and their right to choose and to be treated with dignity

To apply, you will need to complete an application form and demonstrate how you meet the requirements as set out in the role descriptions. Please note that the roles are voluntary but we will reimburse travel expenses in line with the Trust Volunteer Policy. Register your interest below to receive a link to our application form.
