Description of the opportunity:

Who we are:

We believe there are three barriers to getting online and as Stockport’s leading provider of digital inclusion activities we are here to help you over come these barriers. We work with various organisations across Stockport to offer digital help to their participants. This is either support to use the computers, or to help people use their own devices to get things done. Some people have tasks to do like editing a CV or looking up information online. Other people want to get skills for work, want to try online shopping, or have questions about using their device.

What are we looking for:

Chelwood food bank and Starting Point are teaming up to support people locally and find 3 Digital champions for Chelwood food bank. We welcome people with disabilities to volunteer with us, please talk to us about any reasonable adjustments we can make to help you volunteer. You do need to volunteer in a sometimes noisy environment. We welcome people who are learning English – you do need to read online information and feel happy to explain how to do digital tasks to other people. This role can be done flexibly, you can volunteer between once a month to every week.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

Can you support Foodbank customers at Chelwood food bank, Brinnington, Stockport, with online tasks? Our Digital champions help people learn digital skills such as browsing websites, completing online forms, updating benefits diaries and writing CV. You’ll also be getting stuck in with foodbank volunteering such as packing bags, updating the computer system, and giving out fresh produce. We know that this will help you meet food bank customers, and other volunteers, so you’ll be part of the team.

Chelwood food bank customers have told us that if they struggle with online tasks, then it makes a tough time even tougher. Our customers have also told us that they struggle to get to traditional computer classes, so we want to solve that problem! Full training given.

We will offer you full training and support from staff when you start volunteering, ongoing training, both face to face and online, as well as socials and opportunities to meet other Digital champions. You’ll be part of a supportive and friendly volunteer-led team, with backup from Chelwood food bank and Starting Point staff, so you won't ever volunteer on your own.

You do need to be confident talking to new people – you may be starting conversations over a brew, and you may be hearing some difficult stories. (we’ll give you help with how to do that) You will need a patient and friendly personality! Not all our customers feel happy about digital, and they’ll let you know! (don’t worry, you don’t have to change their minds).

Location and Time Commitment: We are looking for 2-3 volunteers, so you won't need to volunteer every week unless you want to. This role will be on Wednesdays 1.30pm – 2.30pm. Address is The Lighthouse Centre, Northumberland Road, Brinnington, SK5 8LS.
