Breaking Barriers is looking for volunteers who can support their refugee clients by delivering their Digital Skills (DS) training. Depending on each client's needs, the training can be delivered in 3 to 8 sessions, over the course of several weeks. The design of the course makes it easy for all volunteers to deliver 1:1 sessions by following the Instructor's handbook. Training on materials, the asylum system In the UK and barriers to employment will be provided.

 

Digital Skills Volunteer | Role Description 

Location and days: In-person (Manchester City centre); Monday to Friday, between 10am-5pm 

Commitment: Between 3 and 8 sessions. Each session is between 45 minute - 1.5 hours. Number of sessions vary depending on the client’s needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for students, seasonal workers or people who are looking to gain experience in client facing work.

Digital Skills Training Overview

Many of the clients we support lack some of the key digital skills to fully integrate in the UK. Breaking Barriers (BB) strives to support refugees and those from refugee background in being ready to enter the job market and developing adequate digital skills are included in this support.

The sessions delivered by volunteers include topics like:

- Basic computer skills;

- Essential applications (Microsoft Office; Outlook and Gmail; Managing and syncing calendars; Videoconferencing software);

 - Safely navigating the Internet (how to safely find Information and do transactions online; how to avoid online fraud;

- Using LinkedIn.

The number of sessions and themes covered will depend on each clients' needs.

Skills Required: 

  • Excellent communication skills, including fluent/native level of English  
  • Knowledge of the UK job market 
  • Reliability and flexibility
  • Access to Zoom
  • Alignment with Breaking Barriers’ mission and values
    • Desirable: an additional language including Arabic, Ukrainian Farsi/Dari, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto.
