Refugee Week in June: How to Get Involved

Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts & culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Established in 1998 in the UK, Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day (20th June). The theme for Refugee Week in 2025 is “Community as a Superpower”.

Refugee Week has evolved into an international movement, with events spanning the globe.

Macc has collated some of the events being held by the amazing members of our GM Sanctuary Seekers network and other organisations this year, which you can view below. The Female Face of Poverty

"In 1978, Diana Pearce coined the term ‘feminisation of poverty’, describing the trend towards more and more of the burden of poverty being borne by women. Five decades later, this reality persists around the world.

With Women’s History Month having concluded in March, I took the opportunity to talk about women and poverty. The purpose of this piece is not to diminish the experiences of men, but to bring into spotlight and reflect on the realities faced by women globally, alongside some sobering statistics closer to home.

Although not all of the world's poor are women, a significant portion are. It is widely recognised that women are more susceptible and exposed to poverty and social exclusion than men, due to factors such as gender-based violence during conflict, traditional gender roles, their roles as primary caregivers, their association with more private, internal spaces and a myriad of other socio-economic influences. Experts warn that if this continues, there is a real risk of a global regression in women’s rights."

Climate Action in Manchester's VCSE Sector: Building Equity, Collaboration, and Resilience

The Policy and Influence Team at Macc warmly invite you to join us on the 25th of June, from 10am to 1pm at the St Thomas Centre for the launch of our colleague Michaux Danzoll’s impact research on the landscape of climate action within Manchester’s VCSE sector. This event aims to explore the key barriers faced by organisations in engaging with climate work and to identify opportunities for collaboration and targeted support that can help mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis on our neighborhoods and communities, particularly through an inequality lens.

We will highlight inspiring projects already underway in the city and discuss how we can foster learning, partnership and innovative solutions to build a more resilient, inclusive, and equitable approach to climate action.

Details of speakers and the full agenda will be shared soon.

When: 25th June, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

UK Small Charity Research Award – Round Two Now Open!

"At nfpResearch, we believe that high-quality insights should be accessible to organisations of all sizes—especially small charities that are often closest to the issues but furthest from the resources. Building on the success of our first Small Charity Research Award, we are delighted to announce that we are launching a second round today.

Introducing Round Two

This round will be slightly different from round one. The aim of this round is to help organisations better understand what the public thinks about your target issues, your work, or your key messages. Successful applicants will be able to submit questions into a nationally representative survey of the general public, where you can test messaging, explore public opinion on your cause, or gather evidence to inform your work.

We are inviting applications from small charities and Community Interest Companies (CICs) in the UK with an income of under £1m.

By taking this shared survey approach, we are hoping to support at least 10 small charities, helping more organisations benefit from research without the cost."

Working together to safeguard children

"Statutory guidance on multi-agency working to help, support and protect children.

Nothing is more important than children’s welfare. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable, and loving home. Children who need help and protection deserve high quality and effective support. This requires individuals, agencies, and organisations to be clear about their own and each other’s roles and responsibilities, and how they work together. In this guidance, a child is defined as anyone who has not yet reached their 18th birthday. ‘Children’ therefore means ‘children and young people’ throughout.

It applies to:

  • all organisations and agencies that have functions relating to children
  • all education providers and childcare settings"

The mental health of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK 2025 Edition

"The Mental Health Foundation’s vision is good mental health for all. But a society cannot be mentally healthy whilst it allows the mental health of some of its members to continue to suffer and deteriorate. The first edition of this report, originally published in February 2024, presented evidence on the economic, social, and cultural circumstances which asylum seekers and refugees who seek sanctuary in the UK can face, and how these experiences can harm their mental health and even lead to suicidal feelings and actions. At the Mental Health Foundation, we approach these challenges through the lens of public mental health which focuses on the improvement of mental health and wellbeing though preventative work involving communities, organisations, and individuals."

New paper for policy makers on including the voice of lived experience in policy making

"Produced as part of the Equalities workstream of the VCSE Accord, this document brings together key principles for including the voice of lived experience in policy making with practical guidance around remuneration and examples of this in practice.

Greater Manchester has ambitions as a city-region to do things differently and the Greater Manchester Strategy states that GM will ‘involve people in the decisions we make and actions we take’. This guidance aims to support this by ensuring direct and first-hand experiences are leading the development of policy, and that those with lived experience truly have a voice in decision-making."

VCFSE Commissioning in Crisis: Advocating For Our Struggling Sector

"We had another lively GM VCFSE Commissioning and Investment Meeting last week, so there’s lots to share with you. Our co-chairs and members were on form, so there was plenty of information sharing and – of course – lively debate.  We spent most of our meeting focussed on how we influence our partners to improve their commissioning practices. A hot topic was the current Leadership Group’s campaign about sector stability – where it had gained traction locally, and what the impact has been so far."

VoiceAbility: Manchester Advocacy Alliance Introductory Workshop

"Join other groups to explore how an Alliance could enable more people in Manchester to be heard when it comes to their health and care.

If you are someone who wants communities in the City of Manchester to be heard, we (VoiceAbility) want to hear from you.

What we're trying to do

We’re building a network of individuals and organizations interested in developing a Manchester Advocacy Alliance. Our goal is to create a shared understanding of the barriers that prevent people being heard, especially communities that are already marginalised. We aim to work with members of those communities to co-design solutions that remove these barriers and reduce inequities. The Advocacy Alliance will serve as a central platform to share resources, drive community engagement, and empower more people to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Come along to this introductory workshop to learn more about what we're trying to achieve, share your views on the barriers and gaps, explore what different organisations are already doing in this area and imagine the potential of what could be achieved through an Advocacy Alliance.

We’re eager to engage with people, organizations, and communities to shape this initiative into something that’s meaningful and effective for all citizens of Manchester."

Date & time: 10 June 2025, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Venue: St. Thomas Centre, Ardwick Green North, Manchester, M12 6FZ
