Making an audio piece

A short audio piece (preferably a couple of minutes) can have a strong impact and convey the importance of your work. Audio can often be stronger than video as you need to concentrate and each listener can create their own images in their imagination. It can sometimes be more appropriate than film to and easier to get people involved in.

Here are some resources to help you think about why you might use audio, the best way to use it and tips on editing using Audacity (a free editing package). Remember it should be 80% planning 20% doing!

Why use audio?
It can often be better to use audio than video. People don't neccessarily want to be on film, there maybe issues of safety and not wanting to be identified or it just could be that they feel self conscious. Sometimes the story is about sound, it can be better to let the imagination draw the pictures. It can be easier to get and edit a piece of quick effective audio than producing a video.

Planning
It is always good to plan your audio first. This planning sheet will help you think about what you want to say and who you need to talk to.

Editing – Downloading and using Audacity
Audacity is a free audio editing software. Download it from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

To enable you to save files as MP3s you need to also download Lame and run it.

Audacity is quite simple to use, you highlight pieces of audio file and delete them. You can also layer music underneath your recording - it gives you three layers to work with. The best thing to do is have a play but if you do need guidance watch one of the tutorials on YouTube.
