Venue:
Gorton Hub, 27 Garrat Way, Manchester, M18 8HE

Poor housing conditions can have detrimental impacts on tenant’s health and wellbeing.

In collaboration with the People’s Health Trust, CAHN is delivering a Homes for Health project which “is a collaboration between the Trust and experts from housing, community, and racial justice civil society organisations, delivering projects that respond to the growing problem of unfit private and social rented homes and their effects on tenants’ physical and mental health. At the centre of the work are marginalised people whose intersecting identities make them more likely to experience poor mental and physical health caused by their sub-standard homes and insecure tenancies.” Homes for Health | People's Health Trust

As part of the project delivery, CAHN is organising The Healthy Homes Conference designed to address critical issues at the intersection of health and housing. This event will bring together key officials from the housing sector, landlords, health stakeholders, civic leaders and tenants to engage in meaningful dialogues, and commit to improving housing standards.

“The private-rented sector in the UK is growing and has worse housing conditions than any other sector. Conditions such as excess cold and overcrowding can affect physical health and mental wellbeing throughout life. Increasing energy-efficiency and removing damp and mould can improve health”. This extract is from a 2018 Houses of Parliament document. Unfortunately, six years down the line, it still an issue worth focusing on.

It is hoped that a collaborative approach between landlords, local authorities, health providers and community organisations may help in finding solutions.
