Description of opportunity:

Our outdoor adventure volunteers will help us to deliver outdoor based trips and sessions to our young people and families. They encourage young people and their families to stretch their comfort zones through trying new activities, explore new surroundings safely, and build skills and confidence in the outdoors

Manchester Youth Zone is in Harpurhey, the 2nd worst ward in England for the effect of long-term deprivation on children. This means many are vulnerable to poor educational attainment, future worklessness and falling in to antisocial or offending behaviour.

The good news is we give young people countless opportunities to change that story for themselves. We believe young people can create their own futures by being supported to dream bigger and aim higher.

What you can expect to be doing

• Helping staff to run outdoor trips by chaperoning/supporting our young people and their families. Trips could include hiking, mountain biking, shorter local mindfulness walks, watersports, archery and more!

• Helping our staff and young people plan and organize the trips, to include route planning, promotion of the trip, and risk assessments

• Support our staff to make the trips as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible

• Support our Social Action Youth Worker with any opportunities for young people, that could include conservation volunteering, path rebuilds etc.

• Building positive relationships with young people across the youth zone

• Working collaboratively with staff to provide the best possible experience for young people

• Supporting young people with additional needs

• Acting as a positive role model for young people

• Promoting an inclusive culture where all young people are listened to, valued, and cared for

What are the benefits to you and to our young people

You will learn new skills and develop existing ones whilst making a significant contribution to the lives of the young people. You will become part of our team and our young people will have a great time learning new skills. You will enhance your CV whilst also being there as a positive role model to many of our young people. The benefits really are endless!
