Description of opportunity:

As a volunteer, you will support our small, dynamic museum. Our museum is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and part-time staff. Although we are smaller than many museums, we have big ambitions and are very proud of our collection.

As a Volunteer Museum Assistant, you will be enhancing what we do here and how we care for our collection. Our team is a mixture of both deaf and hearing people.

We can support new volunteers by providing a BSL interpreter if needed.

What you will be doing:

  • Welcoming Museum visitors
  • Supporting staff to organise and catalogue the archive
  • Helping to raise BDHS’s profile via social media
  • Support with events and exhibitions
  • Giving visitors tours of the collection on display

What we would like you to bring to the role:

  • An interest and enthusiasm for the culture of the deaf community
  • Interest in museums and galleries
  • A friendly and open personality
  • Knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) would be great but not essential Opportunities:
  • To gain insight into the workings of a museum
  • A chance to work directly with collections
  • To gain experience in using museum catalogue systems
  • Experience of events and exhibition

One, two-hour volunteer session per week. Sessions will take place Monday to Wednesday, during Museum opening hours.

Please note we are happy to reimburse any out-of-pocket travel expenses up to £5 per day.
