Description of opportunity:

As a volunteer, you will support our small, dynamic museum to have a greater online presence. Our museum is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and a part-time staff team. Although we are smaller than many museums, we have big ambitions and are very proud of our collection and telling the story of the deaf community.

What you will be doing:

  • Work with our staff and volunteer team to select objects that tell the stories of deaf communities.
  • Contribute to new online content for our website and social media channels
  • Help to raise BDHSs profile via social media
  • Support our Heritage Assistant to set up a blog and produce content for it
  • Support the Heritage Assistant to carry out an audit of our website and implement changes
  • Exploring our collection and archive

What we would like you to bring to the role:

  • An interest and enthusiasm for the culture of the deaf community
  • Interest in museums and galleries
  • A friendly and open personality
  • Some knowledge of social media platforms
  • Good written English
  • Knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) would be great but not essential

Opportunities:

  • To gain insight into the workings of a museum
  • A chance to work directly with the deaf community
  • The opportunity to work directly with collections
  • To gain experience in using museum catalogue systems
  • Experience developing online content

Time Commitment: One, two-hour volunteer session per week. Sessions will take place Monday to Wednesday, during Museum opening hours.

Please note we are happy to reimburse any out-of-pocket travel expenses up to £5 per day.
