South Asian Heritage Month - Local Groups

green background with South Asian Heritage Month written in the middle with paisley ornaments decorating the corners in red, orange and green.

Local groups and organisations:

Pakistani Resource Centre – our aim is to make a practical and positive difference by providing support and empowerment to the South Asian Communities (Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi) within the Greater Manchester. To confront some of the problems they may be experiencing including unemployment, poor housing in inner city areas, racial abuse and cultural alienation.

Saheli – our mission is to provide support and refuge from domestic abuse to women from Black, Asian and minority communities and their children, to improve social inclusion, build confidence and skills, achieve emotional and practical well-being, and enable them to lead independent lives.

Ethnic Health Forum – the primary stimulus of setting up this new group was to challenge the existing operational structures within third sector organisations working with BAME communities in Manchester. EHF felt that most BAME organisations were shy in adapting Information technology in their routines and hesitant in introducing digital technologies in service provisions. Moreover, EHF takes pride in actively participating with UK academic institutes in their research about health and social care issues of BAME communities.

The Greater Manchester Bengali Hindu Cultural Association – GMBHCA celebrates Hindu social and religious festivals that include Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja or Diwali, Saraswati Puja and organises cultural activities such as Bijoya Sammilani, Bengali New Year (Naboborsho) and other functions which include Classical, Folk and Bollywood dances, music and dramas involving the younger generation and guest artists of the community.

Cheetham Hill Advice Centre – in providing residents with clear and comprehensive advice and support, we empower them to make their own choices and decisions about their lives, to bring about lasting change and improvements in their standard of living and general health and wellbeing. We can provide advice in Arabic, Urdu, Pushto, Punjabi, German, Cantonese, Mandarin, Malay, Bahasa, Hakka and English.

Manchester Buddhist Centre – we are part of the Triratna Buddhist tradition, a member of the Network of Buddhist Organisations and an active partner in the Greater Manchester Buddhist Convention. We welcome Buddhists of all traditions to our Centre, along with all members of the community.
