Nurturing Foundations
Nurturing Foundations is a CIO based in Harpurhey (North Manchester), a predominantly Black community, which is the second worst ward in England for the effect of long-term deprivation on children and families. Our families live in poverty, have a poor quality of life, suffer inequalities (e.g. health, education, employment), many had adverse childhood experiences and most lack aspirations. Our community’s situation is worsening due to the cost-of-living crisis. Our vision is for Black families to have the aspirations, resilience, and skills to flourish and the confidence to play an active role in civic life.
Our community services include positive youth programmes that develop young people into social action leaders, young parent programmes, Radequal (tackling prejudice and division), and health and wellbeing initiatives.
We formed the African Caribbean Alliance which we lead in response to our and others’ concerns that our community doesn’t have a strong voice in local decision making and that statutory and other outside services are neither culturally competent nor meeting our needs.
