Beehives

Where do they work?: Hulme
Registered charity number: 0
Description: The Beehive works towards providing different activities to achieve tailored goals responding to communities needs and requirements like mental health, isolation, raising awareness, gaining confidence and training that works towards individuals’ skills and making use of them.
Beehives are structured in layers which designed for bees to work together towards one goal. It is an excellent metaphor for active community. I named my organisation “Beehives” because I like to design different projects which connect or work towards connecting communities and neighbourhoods
We are passionate and sensitive towards cultures, ethnicities, beliefs, faiths and genders. Our long-term goal is to develop leadership and independency among the community so they can in turn be confident and run their own activities like groups or business.
We will also be working toward to encourage them to bring their own skills in use by finding more about individuals.

1. Hulme Community Lunch

Hulme has been under development for past few years and becoming a part of Manchester city centre faster than one can imagine. It is a hub of a wide, vibrant and diverse community of residents has a large and transient students community living in high rise and houses. Hulme residents facing many issues like mental health, poverty, elderly people, disabilities, families with small children on Universal credit and all the issues that brings. Hulme plan a summer festival to help bring all the community together and provide a very relaxed fun day. I decided I wanted to give something back to my community and having discussed some ideas with the local community I realised that food brings people together and the Hulme Community Lunch became our first ever project . It was funded by Manchester City council and One Manchester . It became part of hulme summer festivel . It was designed to connect whole community in one place. I involved members of the community from the beginnging of this project to plan what would they like this event to be .They choose a food related project and they helped to choose the menu. We had 5 total meetings and developed action plans for each activity . Our intention was to include every race and age and gender in this summer celebration to boost community spirit once again . we arranged all traditional and ethnic Halal food and vegitarian options as well as some fun activities for children like face painting ,Hennah , karaoke machine , bubble machine and smoothy bikes. The project was not only about food , it was a project designed to build confidence and improve mental welbeing. After planning and funding ,just to make it extra special for every one , I set up an art project to design invitations and decorations with me for this event . We made crape paper flowers with the help of a group of children of all ages . It was a festive feeling to see community involvment in flower making to painting centre pieces for the tables . It also creagted lots ofexcitement among children .Whole event was mixture of art ,colours and community spirit .

2. Piece of me -Art Project
This was a 4 days project and I have worked with 4 different age groups each day. “Piece of Me” was collage of individual memories or expressions which came in form of the abstract form of paintings like graffiti. We invited 4 age groups of the community to draw, write or paint on canvas, something which represents one part of their life or childhood or unexplained feeling or emotion which come out as an expression on the canvas in case on young people. It was an abstract collage of expressions which could be something personal of an individual but Idea behind was to link everyone personal story or memory one a one place to represent as a community. Main Idea was to draw and paint on 5 canvases. Each age group was asked to leave something which next group can turn into something different. It’s like footsteps. Final out come looks like that everyone adopted one style or theme. A Few kids started using hands rather using brushes. In few minutes there were so many vibrate colours were on those canvases. Kids were drawing, and painting different things like their name in style, monsters and butterflies. People who could draw start writing messages and poems on the board. So, it was an exercise which started from expressing their selves to ends up the biggest turn out for love messages for the community centre. People start writing messages in different languages and some in Numbers which was the whole point of this project to leave their marks without being afraid. There is no right and wrong and that’s reflected in this project when it comes to express. It connected emotions and energy combine and created a powerful visual.
