Description: Inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, can be extremely debilitating conditions that can take their toll on a person's physical, social and mental wellbeing. They can lead to physical pain, negative self-image, lack of self-esteem and confidence, and bouts of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Greater Manchester Eczema & Skin Support (GMESS) supports people who are affected by long-term inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, to improve their physical, social and mental wellbeing through improvements to self-care. We use lifestyle change as the main approach to supporting service users to improve their skin health and mental wellbeing. These lifestyle areas included mindset, diet, nutrition, hydration, exercise, sleep, and skin care.
The core activities we use to improve self-management skills of service users are:
• Peer support groups: online and in-person to connect to other people with similar experiences, reduce isolation and share self-care advice. We also utilise WhatsApp group messaging, supporting service users to access regular skin health information and peer support
• Healthy Skin, Healthy Me - Wellbeing courses: 2 courses covering the:
o psychological issues related to skin conditions e.g. support, stress, self-image
o practical application of lifestyle approaches to managing skin health and wellbeing including diet, nutrition, hydration, exercise
• 1-to-1 support: to support service users in achieving their skin health goals using a psychosocial coaching approach
