Description:

Each week approximately 8,000 minority ethnic children attend supplementary schools run by their respective communities. This is in addition to the education they receive at their mainstream schools.

These supplementary schools are run by community groups and operate out of school hours at weekends and in the evenings.

They provide support for a wide range of activities that cannot be easily covered by mainstream schools given the diversity of the pupil population in our schools. This includes cultural studies, home language (Mother Tongue) teaching, and in some cases additional support for children in National Curriculum subjects including English, Maths, Science and ICT.

MSSN exists

To support and promote the work of the Supplementary Schools in Manchester

To establish a network of such schools and encourage community cohesion

To encourage partnership and participation from statutory bodies.
