Below you can find a range of volunteering opportunities with organisations that support LGBTQ+ communities:

Organisation Role Description Next steps

Icebreakers are a a bi-weekly support group for gay/bi/trans men, who are either in the process of coming out, or looking to make new friends. It is run by a team of friendly dedicated volunteers, and they are currently recruiting.

Volunteers are expected to attend 2 meetings per month from 7 - 9pm on a Thursday. They also ask that you attend a monthly meeting, usually on a Monday evening for about 2 hours.

At the Thursday meetings, after training, you’ll have various roles on a revolving basis such as reception, interviewing new service users, guiding and listening to the needs of service users, and generally helping in all aspects of running the group

Pride in Ageing Advisory Group Volunteer

The Pride in Ageing Advisory Group brings together a group of representatives from different backgrounds aged over 50 from LGBTQ+ communities in Greater Manchester. The group undertakes co-production and design of the programme as well as helps to assess the success of the programme with guidance from the Pride in Ageing Manager.

The group currently meets once a month and receives weekly email updates about programme involvement and activity. Meetings include presentations and discussions around matters related to programme activity and updates from members of the group. Members are also invited to special events run by the programme and LGBT Foundation. The group currently meets in a hybrid format – with members joining online via the Zoom video conferencing application and in person at LGBT Foundation’s Community Hub in Central Manchester.

Trans Advocacy Service Volunteer

LGBT Foundation looking for volunteers to support in the delivery of their Trans Advocacy Service – the only service of its kind in the UK outside of London. 

You’ll be helping to answer enquiries via email, telephone and in-person appointments at our office in Central Manchester, about a range of topics relevant to trans and non-binary people’s lives. This may include questions about transitioning, administrative questions (such as how to change name/title details), where to find social support and coming out to friends and family, amongst other topics. You’ll also be working with trans and non-binary clients to complete deed polls, and support with evidence gathering for Gender Recognition Certificates applications.

Village Angels & Haven

LGBT Foundation are looking for volunteers to join their Village Angels & Haven team. You will be a friendly presence in the Village supporting those in need during Friday and Saturday nights, and making the village a safe place to be.

They are looking particularly for women, people of colour and people over 40, as they are currently underrepresented.

Advice Support Volunteer

Help reduce poverty and financial hardship for people living with HIV by supporting with the completion of financial applications to grant-giving organisations on behalf of service users. You'll build capacity within the team by supporting with various administrative tasks and projects in a busy office environment.
