Migrant Destitution Fund GM

What is Migrant Destitution Fund GM?

The Migrant Destitution Fund supports migrant people who have "no recourse to public funds" - a policy which leaves people unable to meet their basic needs, not supported by the state and not allowed to do paid work to support themselves. People supported by the Fund are mostly asylum seekers and people whose right to remain isn't recognised by the Home Office (e.g. because a relationship breaks down). Many eventually win the right to remain...but it is a long process. It traps people in destitution.

To date, the Fund has supported over one hundred people, making a real difference to their lives:
"...it meant I could submit my application for appeal just in time. I couldn't have done that without this. [The Fund] stops people having to put themselves in unsafe situations to get money."
…it "helps improve life and get the things we need most to feel human again."


How are Migrant Destitution Fund GM monies used?
Local charities identify someone who needs support and make an application to the Fund. Grants are for up to £80 once a month and are typically spent on food, winter clothing, phone credit, travel costs (e.g. to appointments), dental treatment. The applications are looked at by a panel from the Migrant Destitution Action Group which includes people with experience of destitution. Macc administers the Fund but does not take a fee from any of the donations and does not vote on the panel.
