Financials for non-levy organisations with under 50 employees
There are three basic costs to hiring an apprentice:
- New hire or current employee= The apprenticeship training programme co-investment fee as a non-levy paying organisation (£400 +vat)
- New hire = The salary of the apprentice (£14-18k recommended)
- New hire = The Juice Academy recruitment fee (Free for January- £450 going forwards)
The apprenticeship training programme
All apprenticeship standards (programmes) have a set cost which is decided by the Ministry of Education. The Fundraiser Level 3 is £8,000.
Non levy payers only pay 5% of this cost and the government funds 95% through the apprenticeship levy – this is called a co-investment fee = £400 contribution from you.
Should your apprentice (new hire) be aged between 16-18 years, the government will fund 100% of the training and you will receive a financial incentive of £1,000. This is paid in two instalments to you – £500 at 3months and £500 at 12 months. (For charities with over 50 employees, they pay the 5% contribution for 16-18 year olds too, but still get the £1k grant).
Salary of the apprentice
Apprentices are typically on an annual salary of between £14,000 and £18,000 depending on age, experience and what you would like to pay for the role, and it must rise to National Minimum Wage for their age after 12 months. But many employers choose to start them on as high as real living wage. Please note that you do not need to pay National Insurance for apprentices under 25. A saving of around £2k annual.
The Juice Academy Recruitment Fee
There is a small recruitment fee of £450+VAT when The Juice Academy source the talent for you to interview and select from. The Juice Acadmey are offering this FREE for the first Fundraiser cohort starting in January 2024.
Employer requirements
- Support and mentoring in the workplace via a full time line manager (can be remote)
- The employer must provide the apprentice with a laptop for work (that they can also log onto the online sessions)
- ‘20% off the job training’ (minimum 6 hours a week) – the apprentice needs to evidence that they are in training/developing/learning something new 20% of their working hours. The employer needs to ensure they are giving the apprentice this time during working hours. The tutor led training sessions fall under this, as well as self-study tasks and assessments that we set them in their digital system (BUD) and also can include internal training in the workplace.
[If a] current [charity] employee coming onto the course. Their salary and contract would remain the same, would just ensure they are given the 20% off the job training (min.6 hours a week) towards their training/studies. They would need to have an A-C/9-4 in Maths and English GCSE. They would complete a few eligibility assessments before we can determine they’re eligible, and then the Juice Academy would enrol them onto the programme once the paperwork has been completed. As long as this is done before 11 January, they can start on the next cohort.
