GM AHSN Technology Innovation Challenge 2015/16

Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network (GM AHSN) will be inviting applications to its Technology Innovation Challenge on 1 December 2015. The theme for this Technology Innovation Challenge Call is: Assistive Technologies – Reducing Social Isolation to support recovery, health and wellbeing.

GM AHSN are particularly interested and priority will be given to devices that:
• Reduce social isolation within the ‘usual place of residence’ for the patient. This may be at home, in the community or a care home setting, and
• Address isolation caused by one or more of the following conditions; dementia; mental health problems; learning difficulties; cognitive impairment (e.g. post stroke); and vascular disease.

The call does not include technologies for data mining / handling big data or fundamental research.

The aims of the Technology Innovation Challenge are:
• To support innovation pipeline at earliest stage (Industry and Wealth ‘gear’ - investment for innovation)
• To support engagement of academic, NHS and industry as partners in innovation (Industry and Wealth ‘gear’ – culture for innovation)
• Ultimately, to deliver patient benefit

Its key principles for project funding are:
• Inventive, novel, innovative application of “academic/technological” expertise
• Relates clearly and appropriately to NHS clinical/patient/public health and wellbeing unmet need
• Recognises the commercialisation requirements to get a technology solution to market
• The TIC award will make a recognisable difference to the development of a solution and its delivery into the market place for patient benefit

Successful applicant will be judged against these aims and principles.

Projects must be completed within 9 months and awards will be capped at £30,000 per project. A maximum of 3 full awards will be made.

The call is open to all GM AHSN members and partners including the 4 universities (Bolton, Manchester, Salford and MMU), GM SME’s, all NHS staff from GM AHSN member Trusts and CCGs and GM voluntary sector.
