Three million volunteers already make a critical contribution to the provision of health and social care in England - for example the Health Champions programme of trained volunteers that work across the NHS to improve its reach and effectiveness. 
Health Education England (HEE) has launched a consultation document to inform the NHS's volunteering strategy.
The consultation document sets out what volunteering takes place within the NHS currently and brings together for the first time many pieces of guidance and information to inform thinking on what volunteering could look like in the NHS and how it can contribute to patient care and experience.
