if Volunteering for wellbeing – Taster sessions

Imperial War Museum North and Manchester Museum are actively seeking to recruit people who want to improve their health and wellbeing, specifically:
• Young people (16-25 years old)
• Ex-service personnel
• Older people (50 years plus)

Applications will be considered from anyone in the Greater Manchester area who feels they may benefit from the programme.

Taster sessions are taking place on:

A new and exciting volunteer training programme delivered at Imperial War Museum North and Manchester Museum. Participants will embark on a 16 week training programme that will help develop communication skills, increase confidence and improve wellbeing. It will provide practical experience in customer service skills as well as the opportunity to take part in an accredited training course.

The training course will run at IWM North and Manchester Museum for 10 weeks where participants will learn about their chosen museum and find out more about volunteer roles in heritage venues. At week six, participants start to volunteer in the museum to gain practical experience on gallery. On completion of the 10 week course, volunteers will have the opportunity to apply for a further 6 week placement at one of the partner heritage venues listed below:

• Manchester City Galleries
• Manchester Jewish Museum
• Museum of Science and Industry
• Ordsall Hall
• People’s History Museum
• Whitworth Art Gallery

In addition to the 10 week course there is a programme of training and support to further develop skills and knowledge:
• Welcome International (accredited customer service training)
• Volunteer-to-volunteer mentoring
• Visit and learn about other heritage venues

Participants will gain new skills, practical experience of working as part of a team, access to training, and increased confidence. Staff will also work with participants to help them find:
• New volunteering opportunities – following completion of the programme, volunteers may continue at their chosen venue (depending on vacancies), or will be offered further opportunities at organisations in the city.
• Employment – Learning new skills and gaining real work experience will enhance CVs. Participants of previous programmes have secured jobs in both the cultural and no-cultural sector.
