Join the Somme 100 Pals – call for volunteers

21 Apr 2016 - 09:54 by michelle.foster

400 volunteers are needed to take part in a unique performance to commemorate the lives of those who served in or were affected by the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago. Are you enthusiastic aged 18 or over, male or female, who’ll relish the opportunity to become involved in a truly oneof-a-kind, historic event? Volunteers will be part of a short movement-based dance piece – though no previous experience is required.

You will join an outstanding and inspiring line-up, including the Hallé Orchestra, poet Lemn Sissay OBE, and a children’s choir of 300, performing to an outdoor audience of thousands. Tutored by professional choreographers Lucy Hind and Dan Watson, whose previous work has included movement and dance pieces for the London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony, you’ll be dressed in a specially made-to-measure costume as a member of the ‘Somme100 Pals’. The performance will be a moving tribute to the many Pals’ battalions from the region and across the UK whose devastating losses impacted on whole communities.

Experience of dance or performance is not important; skilled choreographers will guide you through four rehearsals on site at Heaton Park, and online tutorials.

Rehearsals and the performance will take place in Heaton Park, and people from all Greater Manchester boroughs are encouraged to apply. People of all abilities are welcomed to apply. Access needs will be catered for and travel expenses will be provided if necessary.

The only essential recruitment criteria are that a) you commit to attending all four scheduled rehearsals in June and the performance itself on Friday 1 July from 6pm, and b) you are excited to be involved in something out of the ordinary.
