Macc’s Statement: Leaving X

Twitter was once a fantastic tool for us to keep in touch with organisations and individuals. Due to changes to the algorithms, we are no longer reaching our followers on their feeds, nor can we view our analytics to maximise our platform usage. We cannot perform core tasks of notifying followers and organisations in Manchester of what is happening in the city and how they can get involved.

More importantly, the changes to X have seen normalisation of hateful, discriminatory comments and posts targeted at minoritised groups increased, with little to no moderation. Freedom of speech is important but is not freedom to incite hatred and division. Under its new owner, X has become a toxic space which encourages hate, discrimination and purposely amplifies false information which has led to real fear, pain and violence. Macc is dedicated to equity, inclusivity and respect for all and we seek to uplift and empower Manchester communities. X is not a suitable space for this anymore and we can no longer support it.

Therefore, we have made the decision to step away from using X on 10th February 2025. We will no longer be posting, replying or checking messages on X from this date. We have taken a decision to do what is right for ourselves and the organisations and communities we work with in Manchester.

We will focus instead on connecting and building on other social media platforms: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and YouTube. We hope that you can join us on these and of course connect with us directly through our website and bulletins. We have put together a useful resource on joining Bluesky and helpful information for getting started on the platform. You can view this here.

Please be aware that, although all of Macc’s projects will be leaving X, some partnerships that we work with may decide to continue using the platform for the foreseeable future.
