This month in Manchester’s Northern Quarter holds the first solo exhibition, THEY COME IN THREES, of Manchester based artist FNTSYWRLD. Featured at the buzzing new three floor exhibition space, Saan1, FNTSYWRLD’s artwork will take over from 17 - 31 October 2022. THEY COME IN THREES will feature ‘On The Streets – Painting for Homelessness’, a project raising money for Manchester’s most prominent homeless helpers.
Quote from Artist:
“In 2021, I began my project, ‘On The Streets – Painting for Homelessness’. What I would be doing is transporting my art process to the outdoors, namely Stevenson Square. The reason being is so that I could experience a small fraction of the vulnerability that the homeless face daily. I created 3 large paintings (5ft x 4ft) entirely outside – meeting many people throughout and spreading my message of awareness and compassion toward the homeless. Now, this project will feature in my upcoming solo exhibition, THEY COME IN THREES, with the goal of raising £6,500 to be donated directly to ‘Don’t Walk Past’ – a selfless crew of helpers that devote their time and money to regularly supply the homeless with hot food, clothes, sleeping bags and other essentials to surviving the streets.
I chose ‘Don’t Walk Past’ from specific testimonials of people I spoke to, who were currently living on the streets. They vouched that ‘Don’t Walk Past’ were who they receive the most practical help from regularly. Since they are self-funded, I decided to raise the money to help their practice as I believe money can get lost in bigger charities sometimes. Homelessness has always been something I’ve wanted to contribute toward helping; for no other reason than the basic human things that everyone should be entitled to - food and drink, clothing, shelter and opportunity.
On the other floors of THEY COME IN THREES, are my other works of art – ranging from vibrant contemporary paintings to suggestive pencil illustrations. All of my artwork draws from my mental state. Whether that be in poor condition or contemplating origins of thoughts. Making art for me is similar to journaling, or having a diary specifically for mental states, emotions and turmoil. Art is therapy, making something physical, from nothing but my own mentality. I also think that this subject matter is relatable to anyone who struggles mentally and that appeals to me – helping others find comfort in obscure thought. I am exhibiting a series of illustrations, exploring my experience of the male gaze and how I, among many men, seemingly instinctively objectify Women upon first glance. I am confronting this as a truth, and I am interested in the origins of this mental attribute through societal influences.”
