This survey asks women about their experiences as pedestrians, runners, cyclists, drivers, passengers, and public transport users.
The survey forms part of a research project commissioned by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which will build a detailed picture of women's experiences of safety whilst using the roads across Greater Manchester and help identify practical ways to improve safety, confidence and inclusion across Greater Manchester.
Researchers Dr Caroline Miles and Professor Rose Broad at the University of Manchester are leading the study, which will examine inequalities faced by women road users and explore how experiences and fear can impact upon women’s use of the roads and confidence in travelling around Greater Manchester.
The team is particularly interested in understanding barriers that may affect women's confidence when using roads and transport networks, as well as identifying opportunities to improve safety for current and future generations of road users.
The project is funded through the Vision Zero Innovation Fund and is informed by the Gender-Based Violence Strategy.
Women living, working or travelling in Greater Manchester are encouraged to complete the short online survey and share their insights and concerns.
The survey will explore issues including:
- Experiences of travelling as a driver, passenger, pedestrian, runner, cyclist or public transport user
- Feelings of safety and confidence while travelling
- Worries about road safety and personal security
- Barriers that influence travel choices
- Ideas for improving safety and accessibility
- Evidence to support future changes
