World Aids Day Sunday 1 December - volunteers needed

8 Nov 2013 - 09:33 by michelle.foster

World AIDS Day is a global health day held on the 1 December each year. It's an opportunity for us to unite in the fight against HIV, support people living with HIV and remember people who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.

Manchester World AIDS Partnership brings together key organisations across the City, to mark World AIDS Day each year.

We want every Manchester resident to be HIV aware.

Being HIV aware means:
• Knowing the facts about HIV
• Challenging HIV stigma and discrimination
• If you're sexually active, testing regularly for HIV

As a volunteer you'll be raising HIV awareness and raising funds for local charities. All the money collected will go directly to George House Trust's Welfare Fund for people living with HIV and to support the Lesbian and Gay Foundation's HIV prevention work. Just giving a couple of hours of your time will make a real difference to people's lives in Manchester. You'll also increase your own knowledge about HIV, your confidence about talking to the public and working together with others.

Face to Face Fundraising: teams will be taking to the streets between 11am and 5pm adorned with WAD sashes and shaking a bucket for a very good cause. Volunteers only need sign up for a 2hour shift and will go out in pairs

WAD Procession: volunteers are needed to steward for the procession, keeping everyone on the right track

Vigil Volunteers: volunteers are needed who want to take part in the candlelit vigil in the evening, preparing the park, stewarding people, and selling candles to raise money.

Also, budding artists are needed to paint jam-jars which will hold candles for the vigil.
