On Saturday 11th July 2026 a vast wildfire began at Dove Stone Reservoir, located just outside Oldham. It is still active and has already destroyed 885 hectares of moorland, which is equivalent to 1,250 football fields. Entire hillsides have been scorched and smoke is still emanating from several areas. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue services have been on site for countless hours, throughout demanding conditions, supported by a water dropping helicopter and specialist wildfire units.
Wildfires pose significant threat to both the environment and communities. Wildfires devastate habitats and have long lasting effects on ecosystems. Dove Stone is home to many important habitats and species.
The members of the RSPB Manchester group were distressed to see the news and enthusiastic to help Dove Stone in any way possible.
Throughout the month of August RSPB Manchester group will be organising sponsored walks around the Greater Manchester Ringway route, to raise vital funds to support the RSPB’s recovery work at Dove Stone and reinforce the importance of their role in protecting our local landscapes in the future.
Each Saturday and Sunday will compose of a different section of the ringway, finishing in St Peters Square on 31st August. As a team of birders, walkers and fundraisers the plan is to cover the whole 200 mile route over the month of August to raise vital funds and awareness for the RSPB and Dove Stones.
