Volunteers' Week Stories: Muhammad

Muhammad, 34, from Syria, volunteers with Syrian Community Council.

I’m a Volunteer Teacher at Syrian Community Council and I’m an active member in various activities such as social events, the food pantry, and sports activities.

I’ve been volunteering for about two months. One of the trustees told me about the amazing job that they are doing for the community in Manchester, and I got really excited to help them out.

As I'm an asylum seeker, I want help the community in Manchester. I grew up with the saying ‘the more positive and constructive elements there are in a society, the more it leads to its development and growth’.

When I see that I have given something to others without return; I feel happy. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to see the lives of others in their misfortunes and all the troubles they go through to live another day. When you see all of that, you become thankful for the life you have, and you begin to see that your problems are not as important as you thought, and here you become appreciative of the life that has been given to you. I always feel positive and morally motivated, especially when I have seen the impact of my volunteer work on the lives of others.

To anyone thinking about volunteering, I would advise you to get involved and would remind you about the moral imperatives of volunteer work and its impact on the life of the individual and society.

Volunteer work is a building block in society, and I aim through it to spread the spirit of cooperation, participation, and cohesion among members of society. Great benefits come through volunteering!
