Volunteers' Week Stories: Ghofran

Ghofran, 28, from Syria, volunteers with Syrian Community Council.

My volunteer role is as a teacher in Syrian Community Council and I’m a very active volunteer and help out with many activities such as social events and the food pantry. I have been volunteering with the group for about a year so far.

l heard about the idea of the project from a group of Syrians who live in Manchester, and since I have a university degree in language, I decided to join them and work as a volunteer.
Since I recently moved to the United Kingdom, this was an opportunity to provide work that benefits the community.

l volunteer within an active and understanding group, and I share my skill as a language teacher with the community which gives me positive energy every week. l feel that l am doing an important job in my daily life and it is also a good step to integrate into society. l always feel proud when I hear someone talk about our volunteer impact and the services we provide to the community, which gives me the happiness I seek.

If you’re thinking about volunteering, I would say don’t overthink and take this step without feeling remorse because you will be doing a brilliant thing.
