About
Every June, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month is a celebration of Romany Gypsy, Irish Traveller, Roma and nomadic histories and cultures, within Manchester and across the UK. The month is utilised as a time to raise awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and to educate about eradicating biases and barriers that traditionally may affect the livelihood of those who identify with one of these groups. The month is a symbol to create a more fair and equitable space for these communities within society, something that should similarly be integrated and accepted year round.
This year’s theme
This year’s Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month theme is ‘What does family mean to you?’ The central idea of the theme highlights the diversity within the community of what family means to everyone and the different forms and shapes that this idea of family can hold. The concept of family and kin holds a sacred place within Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and therefore something that should be celebrated, highlighting the achievements and inspiration of individuals and families, both past and present.
