Migrant Destitution Fund

Migrant Destitution Fund GM

The Migrant Destitution Fund supports migrant people who have 'no recourse to public funds' - a policy which leaves people unable to meet their basic needs, not supported by the state and not allowed to do paid work to support themselves. People supported by the Fund are mostly asylum seekers and people whose right to remain isn't recognised by the Home Office (e.g. because a relationship breaks down). Many eventually win the right to remain...but it is a long process. It traps people in destitution.

Local charities identify someone who needs support and make an application to the Fund. Grants are for up to £80 once a month and are typically spent on food, winter clothing, phone credit, travel costs (e.g. to appointments), dental treatment.

Live well

The LiveWell Communities Fund has been co-designed over the past few months in collaboration with the VCSE sector and residents of North Manchester, by listening to their community priorities, local knowledge, and lived experience. By drawing on these elements, the programme has been shaped to reflect community priorities and ensure it provides meaningful support for the residents of North Manchester. Co-design is central to LiveWell’s vision of strengthening community infrastructure and enabling inclusive activities and services that promote health and wellbeing.

LiveWell Communities Fund aims to:

  • Reduce health and racial inequalities by supporting grassroots organisations led by and working with Global Majority communities
  • Support newly emerging groups to pilot new ideas, build capacity and strong foundations
  • Allow established groups to deepen and sustain their impact on community health and racial inequalities

Funding is for groups led by the global majority community, embedded in North Manchester, defined as: Ancoats & Beswick, Charlestown, Cheetham, Clayton & Openshaw, Crumpsall, Harpurhey, Higher Blackley, Miles Platting & Newton Heath and Moston.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the fifth Pan-African Congress, which took place in Manchester in October 1945, we have two £1000 mini-grants available to small African or Caribbean- led voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations in the city of Manchester.

This funding is available to support the ongoing work of your organisation, including those who might have been affected by the current financial climate. The funding does not need to be tied to a new project (though new initiatives are welcome); it can be used in whatever way will be most beneficial to your organisation.

There is a two-stage process:

  1. An open call to small African and / or Caribbean led VCSE organisations in Manchester to express interest in the funding and the opportunity to be one of six shortlisted organisations
  2. Shortlisted organisations will be invited to make a five-minute presentation at Macc’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 25 November.

After the six organisations have made their presentation, AGM attendees will vote on which two organisations receive £1000. The four runners-up will each get £250.
