An introduction to leaders building a trauma-informed workplace and recognising how to increase psychological safety within teams.
What is trauma?
Trauma is unfortunately very common: From car accidents, medical diagnosis, abuse to war, indirectly we talk about it all the time. Trauma can take place outside the workplace (e.g. in people's homes), but also at work. Trauma can look like bullying, harassment, feeling excluded by colleagues. and so on. Trauma is very likely to have an impact on employees, teams, and therefore the wider organisation.
What do we mean by trauma-informed workplace?
A trauma-informed workplace recognises that trauma is common, as well as the impact on staff (such as flashbacks, or being shut-down in meetings). A trauma-informed workplace works to support individual staff members, navigates complex topics relating to confidentiality, disciplinaries/ grievances and job insecurity. A trauma-informed workplace is build around 6 core principles: Safety, empowerment, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness and cultural/gender/historic factors. These principles seem simple enough, and yet can pose a challenge when it comes to implementation in organisational culture or team dynamics.
