Virtual volunteering is volunteering that you can do remotely, i.e from home. Tasks usually need to be completed by using the internet or over the telephone. We have compiled a list of volunteering opportunities below that you can get involved with it.

Dogs Trust: If you're in a position to do so, why not adopt a dog from the Manchester Rehoming Centre? For dogs that they know will thrive straight away in their new home, they are being matched with their new homes virtually and delivered contact-free. Their centres are currently closed and can only be visited by appointment at this current time.

Post Pals: Post Pals is a small charity run solely by volunteers who are dedicated to making seriously ill children and their siblings smile by the sending of cards, letters, little gifts, support and friendship. Send a cheerful card, letter, email, or even a little gift to the child via the address on their page.

Red Cross: Could you provide emotional or practical support to somebody in need? Red Cross are looking for volunteers who can provide help to those who need it most through their National Support Line. You will provide support to those who may have been impacted by COVID-19 or another personal crisis. Some of those you will be helping will need emotional support as they are experiencing loneliness and isolation. Others may need help accessing their medication or food, or to be signposted to an external agency who can provide further support. Volunteers will generally be able to undertake a minimum of one shift (4.5 hours) per week.

Shout: Shout are looking for crisis volunteers - volunteers answer the Shout text line and text back and forth until the person experiencing problems is feeling calmer. This role requires 25 hours of online training over a six-week period before you can volunteer. They are prioritising applicants who can volunteer after 8pm at night.

Sporting Memories: Sporting Memories is an organisation dedicated to bringing together older adults to talk about and remember sport. They provide social and physical activities, too. At Sporting Memories Clubs, everyone finds fun, friendship and increased well-being. The older adults who go to their online or community-based Clubs may be isolated, or living with depression, dementia or other long-term conditions. They are looking for volunteers to facilitate their online sessions and also provide technical support.

The Mix: If you are aged 18-25, you can get involved with online volunteering opportunities with The Mix. You can make a direct difference to the lives of young people, whether it’s through peer to peer support in their online community or one to one support online or via the phone.
