Description of the opportunity:

Who we are:

Rainbow Haven, the only project of The East Manchester Community Association (TEMCA), is a well-established charity based in Gorton, East Manchester. We provide a welcoming environment and essential support services for refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable migrants. Our activities include information and advice services, courses, and initiatives aimed at promoting well-being and helping individuals build a sense of belonging in Manchester. With over 35 years of experience, we work closely with other refugee organizations and receive funding from various charitable trusts and foundations.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking a dedicated individual to join the TEMCA Board of Trustees as a Treasurer. You don’t need prior experience as a Treasurer, but strong financial skills and knowledge are essential. We value individuals who can bring energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion to the role.

In addition to your financial expertise, we are looking for someone who is a clear communicator, a strategic thinker, and enthusiastic about promoting our vision and mission. This voluntary position requires approximately 20 hours per month and involves attending board meetings, annual strategy sessions, and contributing to ad hoc organizational needs.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

As the Treasurer, you will:

  • Oversee the charity's financial affairs, ensuring proper accounting procedures, financial controls, and policies are in place.
  • Present budgets, internal management accounts, and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
  • Advise on the financial implications of TEMCA’s strategic plan and support risk management processes.
  • Monitor financial viability and ensure assets and bank deposits are maximized.
  • Lead the appointment of and liaise with external Independent Examiners.
  • Support the development of board members' financial understanding and ensure compliance with the Charity Commission’s financial requirements.

You will also attend eight Board meetings annually, alternating between remote and in-person formats, as well as participate in annual strategy/training sessions. Beyond Board meetings, there may be opportunities to provide advice, lead discussions, or contribute to initiatives in your area of expertise.
