Description of the opportunity:

At Together Trust we care for and champion the rights, needs, and ambitions of looked after children, and people with disabilities, autism, and mental health differences.  We need help from people who can volunteer to drive in the Manchester and / or Stockport areas.

As a Volunteer Driver, you will help the people we support to lead more fulfilling lives by taking them to a range of places including social activities, work experience placements, day trips, school, and more. You’ll find making a difference becomes fulfilling for you too!

Unlike many other volunteer driver schemes, you do not need to provide your own vehicle – we’ve got those, so no need to worry about wear and tear to your own car.  We also provide staff to accompany the passengers you transport, so no need to worry about doing anything other than driving - they'll probably love to have a chat with you though if you'd like to!

The best things about being a Volunteer Driver with Together Trust:

  • Gain experience in social care – depending on where you would like to travel to and what services you would like to be involved in, you could be transporting students from special education, young people from residential homes, or adults with disabilities.

  • Enjoy a sense of purpose – there’s nothing like the feel-good factor that comes from knowing you’re needed and appreciated, and you certainly will be in this role!

  • Put your driving skills to good use, with no cost to you – if you enjoy driving then this is a perfect way of using that skill, and we’ll not only ensure the vehicle is fuelled up but will also reimburse your travel expenses for getting to/from the vehicle collection point.

  • Feel some structure in your life – you choose the journeys you’d like to do and when, great for building your day or week around if you’ve got a bit of time on your hands.

  • Connect with people – one of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, connecting with others like you will do in this role can be a really valuable way of lifting your own spirits.

What you’ll need:

  • To be aged 21+ with a driving licence you’ve held for at least two years (OR to have a driving licence with a category D1 entitlement). A few spare hours a week (we can give you more if you would like though!)

  • Ideally confidence to drive larger vehicles such as minibuses or MPVs, but if you would like to only drive cars we have opportunities for that too.

  • A calm and patient attitude.

What you’ll receive in return:

  • Full training and preparation for the role
  • Ongoing support
  • Expenses fully reimbursed
  • The vehicles to drive – no need for you to have one
  • References available
  • A meal allowance if we ask you to volunteer for 4 hours or more over a mealtime.

Please note, if your application is successful we will carry out an Enhanced DBS check with children's and adults' barred list and driving licence check before you start in this role.

So if you can drive and would like to use that skill to make a real difference to real people's lives, we would love to hear from you!

You choose what journeys you'd like to do (various options in terms of locations across Manchester / Stockport) and what kinds of passengers you would most like to transport (children in care, pupils with special educational needs, or people with disabilities). We'd love you to make a difference with us - please apply today and join us.
