Description of the opportunity:

Schoolreaders is a charity that matches volunteers to UK primary schools where they give free one-to-one reading support to children.

Do you have an hour or two to spare a week? Could you work with primary school aged children to help improve their reading? Our volunteers go into a local primary school once a week and work with children individually, listening to them read and helping to develop their understanding and their also their enjoyment.

Our volunteers are matched with a primary school local to them or in an area they are able and happy to travel to.  They visit once a week for a minimum of an hour duirng the school day and in term time only (although holidays can be taken during term time).  You will work individually with a group or class of children and will listen to them read a book that the school provides.

The volunteer will help to develop the child's reading, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading by supporting the children as they read and asking questions about what they have read.

Volunteers must be over 18, have good written and spoken English and be willing to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service check) carried out before they start volunteering at the school but this cost is coverd by the school.

Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse any travel expenses but would try to match you with a local school or one that you would be happy to travel to.  We are looking for volunteers to support at primary schools across Manchester, Salford, Tameside and Trafford.

Where it is possible, we require a commitment of at least one year for this volunteering opportunity.
