Who are we?

One Million Mentors is a unique, community-based mentoring programme, bringing together local young people and volunteer mentors who give an hour a month for up to a year.

Since 2018 we've successfully partnered with over 40 schools, colleges, universities and youth organisations across Greater Manchester, creating over 1,500 mentoring relationships. We're also partnered with numerous other local employers.

We recruit our mentors from a variety of professional backgrounds and provide you with specialist training and ongoing support. We then match them you with a young person aged 14-25 based on the mentee's goals and aspirations, targeting young people with high potential but low social capital.

What would you be doing as a volunteer:

We’ll be launching mentoring programmes with the Elizabeth School of London (Manchester Campus) in October 2024 and the University of Law in February 2025!

1:1 you’ll arrange to meet your mentee at a day and time each month of your convenience for 9-12 months. You can mutually decide whether you meet online or face-to-face for each session.

All you need is 5 years work-experience (or 2 if you’re a post-graduate). We’ll provide you with full training and support to help you be the best mentor you can be!

Elizabeth School of London has Certificates, Foundation and BA (Hons) courses in Business, Finance, Computing and Health & Social Care.

The mentees on the University of Law programme will be Foundation Students, likely to go on to study Business or Criminology

Do I have what it takes to be a mentor?

You don't need to have previous mentoring experience, just:
- 5 years work experience (or 2 post-graduate)
- A listening ear
- A willingness to understand the issues young people in Manchester are facing in the current climate
- Capacity to volunteer an hour a month for up to a year

Through our excellent training, Induction Workshop webinar, 6 different Skill-Build webinars (optional), the resources on our platform and also support from ourselves and our Youth Partner's, we'll equip you to be the best mentor you can be.

You'll encourage and guide your mentee, assisting them to explore career options, increase their confidence, build their soft-skills and give them insight into the world of work. If you can provide access to your networks and opportunities that's brilliant in addition to mentoring, but not required of you.

78% of mentors have said 1MM Mentoring has increased their confidence.

48% said they felt their own skills had improved.

Additional Information:

If you don't already have one, our Youth Partners will organise and fund your DBS check.

You'll be able to use our platform to access resources, guidance, to journal and to log goals. We also host online workshops for new mentors as well as skill-builds for existing ones. Alongside our Youth Partners we'll also be on-hand to provide any support needed.
