Who we are:

Action Tutoring unlocks the potential of children and young people who are facing disadvantage. We are tackling the attainment gap head-on by forging partnerships with schools nationwide. Our trained volunteer tutors are empowered to enable pupils to make meaningful academic progress, opening doors to future opportunities. You give an hour a week and they get a brighter future!

What are we looking for?

We look for volunteers who:

  • Have or are studying for a degree (in any subject)
  • Have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor, or a similar subject

If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We take all previous experience into consideration, so please include anything you think might be relevant.

Our tutors range in age (from 18 to 82!) and in background. We are incredibly proud of the diversity in our volunteers and the wealth of experience they bring to the role.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

  • Work with 1-3 pupils to improve their English or maths, online.
  • Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week.
  • Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils.
  • Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions.

What support will I get?

If you haven’t worked with children before, don't worry. We’ll support you through your volunteering programme and will provide:

  •  Training (a two-hour induction session)
  •  In-session support from your Programme Coordinator
  •  Tutor workbooks with session plans
  •  Travel expenses up to £5 per session
  •  A free DBS check
